Pre-Existing Conditions and Pet Insurance in South Africa

A pre-existing condition is generally one that showed signs or was diagnosed before your policy started. How each insurer defines and treats it differs, so ask for the definition in writing.

What two insurers publish
- MediPet: pre-existing conditions are generally excluded. LitePlus is described as designed to cover them, but its page does not give detailed rules. The Benefit Booster add-on can cover conditions a plan excludes, including pre-existing ones. Its availability is described inconsistently on MediPet's pages, so confirm it for your plan.
- Oneplan: its plans page says small dogs and cats up to 11 years can be covered even with pre-existing and hereditary conditions, subject to terms that the page does not set out.

If your pet has a diagnosed condition, ask each insurer whether that condition, and anything linked to it, would be covered. Get the answer in writing before paying a premium. Do not rely on online forum posts about who covers what.
Other ways to plan for care
- Set aside what you would have paid in premiums in a separate savings pocket.
- Ask about payment plans with your vet before treatment begins.
- Look at free or low-cost clinics for routine care: find a clinic.
If you are still choosing, insuring a healthy pet before any problem appears avoids the question of pre-existing exclusions for later conditions.
