Pet insurance is not for everyone. It works best for people with high-cost breeds, no savings buffer, or who want peace of mind. If you have a healthy mixed-breed dog and R15,000 in accessible savings, you may be absolutely fine without it.
How pet insurance works in SA
You pay a monthly premium. Your pet is covered for accidents and/or illness up to an annual limit. In most cases, you pay the vet first and claim the money back afterwards. Oneplan is an exception — they can load funds onto a custom debit card to pay some vets directly at the time of your visit.
- Waiting periods apply. Usually 30 days for illness claims, and 10–12 months for pre-existing or hereditary conditions (like hip dysplasia). You cannot sign up today and claim for something that happened yesterday.
- Age limits exist. Most insurers will not cover a pet older than 8 or 10 years at signup, although they will remain covered if they were insured before that age.
- Pre-existing conditions are excluded. If your dog already has a medical diagnosis when you sign up, that condition will not be covered.
- There is usually an excess. You may need to pay the first R200 – R500 or 10–15% of each claim yourself.

Questions to ask before you buy
- Does this policy cover my breed's known hereditary health conditions (like IVDD for Dachshunds or hip dysplasia for GSDs)?
- What is the annual claim limit — and is it per condition, per event, or overall?
- How much is the excess per claim? Is it a flat rate (e.g., R250) or a percentage (e.g., 10%)?
- Does the insurer pay the vet directly, or do I pay first and claim back?
- What is explicitly excluded? Read the policy document, not just the marketing brochure.
- Can I use any registered veterinarian in South Africa?
If you cannot afford pet insurance
We will never pretend insurance is the only answer. If the monthly premium is genuinely beyond your budget:
- Use SAVA Community Veterinary Clinics for primary care (vaccinations, deworming, spaying) at heavily subsidised rates. Find a clinic →
- Contact your local SPCA — many branches run low-cost clinics for owners below a certain income threshold.
- Start a small emergency fund. Even putting aside R150/month in a separate savings pocket can compile into a buffer over time.
- Ask your vet about a payment plan before treatment begins, not after. Many vets work with payment provider services.
