Who is dotsure.co.za?

Dotsure is a South African insurance provider offering flexible pet cover across five plan tiers. Unlike Oneplan (which requires hospital admission for most claims), dotsure does not require hospitalisation — you can claim for vet visits, consultations, and treatments that don't involve an overnight stay. This makes them a strong choice for routine and outpatient care.

They cover dogs, cats, and certain exotic pets. Their Accident-only plan starts at just R99/month, making them one of the more affordable options, but their Ultimate plan at R1,399/month competes with Oneplan's top tier.

New Add-Ons

Dotsure now offers three add-on products to customise your cover. These are significant changes since our last comparison:

Excess Buster

Reduces or eliminates the excess you pay per claim. Instead of a flat R250–R500 excess on every claim, this add-on can bring it down to zero depending on your plan. Useful if you expect to claim frequently.

Cover Gap Extension

Removes specific sub-limits on certain benefits, increasing the total payout available per condition. This is the one that would have helped the Bella case below — the R9,000 gap between medical expenses and what the base plan covered.

Funeral Support

Covers cremation or burial costs up to a specified limit. Not a unique feature (Oneplan also offers this), but worth mentioning for owners who want end-of-life cover.

Real claim example: Bella — R29,000 gastroenteritis bill

Bella was treated for severe gastroenteritis requiring extensive hospital care. Her total medical expenses came to R29,000. Without add-ons (Excess Buster off, Cover Gap Extension off), after sub-limits and standard excess, dotsure paid R18,000 — leaving the owner with R11,000 out of pocket.

The key insight: With Cover Gap Extension active, the owner's portion would have been significantly lower. This is dotsure's own example — they use it to sell the add-ons, but it's also a real illustration of how sub-limits work.

R29,000 Total vet bill
R18,000 dosture paid (base plan)
R11,000 Owner paid (without add-ons)
R2,000 Standard excess

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • No age limit — covers pets of any age at signup
  • 15% multi-pet discount
  • Exotic pets covered (birds, rabbits, reptiles)
  • 48-hour claim turnaround
  • No hospitalisation required (differentiator vs Oneplan)
  • Flexible add-ons (Excess Buster, Cover Gap, Funeral)
  • Month-to-month subscriptions — cancel anytime

Cons

  • No direct-to-vet payment — you pay first, claim later
  • Sub-limits on each benefit can leave significant gaps without Cover Gap add-on
  • Pre-existing conditions excluded (like all SA insurers except MediPet LitePlus)
  • Waiting periods can be confusing — customers report they were not always clearly disclosed at point of sale
  • TrustPilot rating is poor (1.6 stars, though only 43 reviews vs 7,400+ on HelloPeter)

Claim Process

Dotsure uses a reimbursement model — you pay the vet first, then submit a claim via their online Manage Portal. According to their site, claims are processed within 48 hours. You can use any registered South African vet practice.

Oneplan is the only SA pet insurer that offers true direct-to-vet payment (via their prepaid Onecard system). If that matters to you, dotsure's reimbursement model may be a dealbreaker for major unexpected bills.

Our Verdict

Dotsure is a solid mid-range option — best suited for owners who want flexible plan choices, cover for multiple pets, or have exotic pets that other insurers won't take. The new add-ons (especially Excess Buster and Cover Gap Extension) address real pain points that customers have complained about.

However, the reimbursement model means you need cash flow to pay vet bills upfront. If direct payment matters, Oneplan is a better fit. If you have a pet with pre-existing conditions, MediPet's LitePlus tier is the only option in SA.

Best for: Multi-pet households, owners of exotic pets, people who want month-to-month flexibility without lock-in contracts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Dotsure cover pre-existing conditions?

No. Like all SA pet insurers (except MediPet's LitePlus tier), dotsure excludes pre-existing conditions. You cannot claim for any condition that was diagnosed or showed symptoms before your policy start date.

Can I use any vet with Dotsure?

Yes. Dotsure accepts invoices from all South African vet practices as long as they are qualified and registered with the relevant regulatory bodies. No network restrictions.

How long does Dotsure take to pay claims?

Dotsure advertises 48-hour claim turnaround. You submit your claim via the online Manage Portal and receive reimbursement once approved. Actual time may vary depending on documentation completeness.

What is the Dotsure Excess Buster?

An optional add-on that reduces or eliminates the excess you pay per claim. If you expect to claim frequently (e.g., for a chronic condition), this can save you hundreds of rands each year.

What is the Dotsure waiting period?

Standard waiting period is 30 days for illness claims and up to 12 months for hereditary conditions. Accidents are usually covered from day 1, but always confirm directly at sign-up.

Is Dotsure better than Oneplan?

It depends. Dotsure is better for exotic pets, no age limit, and multi-pet discounts. Oneplan is better for direct vet payment and same-day claims. See our full comparison table.
