Checkers and Shoprite Pet Insurance: What Has Been Reported

What was reported
- Shoprite announced a pet insurance offer through its Petshop Science stores, reported by TimesLIVE on 5 June 2026.
- Xtra Savings members who spend R1,000 or more in a month, in store or through Sixty60, were reported to get one month of free accident cover of up to R10,000 for a dog or cat.
- Standalone pet insurance was reported from R69 a month, with existing policyholders getting R50 off each qualifying month. The report says the standalone products are underwritten by OUTsurance.
- The report does not state waiting periods, exclusions, the claims process, annual limits for the paid products, or whether the free month can be repeated.

Questions to ask Shoprite or its insurer
- Which plans can my pet join, given its species, breed and age?
- What is the annual limit, and are there limits per condition or per claim?
- What is the excess, and is it a flat amount or a percentage?
- Which waiting periods apply to illness, hereditary or orthopaedic conditions, and dental treatment?
- How are pre-existing conditions defined, and is anything covered?
- Do I pay the vet and claim back, or can the insurer pay the vet? How long do claims usually take?
- How and when can premiums change, including after a claim?
